Residents with a passion for their local community are being encouraged to consider becoming a Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Councillor, following the announcement of a forthcoming election to fill a vacant seat on the Town Council.
The Town Council is looking for someone who wants to make a positive difference to the town, represent local people and help shape decisions affecting the community. Alongside the election notice, the Council has published guidance explaining what the role involves and encouraging people from all backgrounds and experiences to put themselves forward.
The guidance highlights that councillors play a vital role in representing residents, influencing local decision-making and improving the quality of life within the community. Councillors are involved in a wide range of responsibilities, including attending meetings, speaking on behalf of residents, helping to develop policies, responding to enquiries and overseeing the services and assets managed by the Town Council.
One of the key messages is that no formal qualifications are required to become a councillor. Anyone aged 18 or over who meets the legal eligibility criteria and has an interest in the future of Leiston-cum-Sizewell is encouraged to consider standing. The Council is particularly keen to attract people with a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences and skills so that it continues to reflect the community it serves.
The successful candidate will join the Town Council until the next scheduled local elections in May 2027. Newly elected councillors receive support from the Town Clerk, including an induction programme and ongoing training throughout their term of office.
The Town Council meets monthly and is responsible for a variety of community facilities and open spaces, including Leiston Community Centre, the Waterloo Centre, Leiston Film Theatre, recreation grounds, allotments, Millennium Wood and Hayling’s Pond, as well as contributing to planning, highways, energy and infrastructure matters.
East Suffolk Council has confirmed that one councillor will be elected to fill the vacancy. Nomination papers are available from the Returning Officer, and if the election is contested, a public poll will be held.
