Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council seeks future Town Clerk through new Deputy appointment

Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council is recruiting a Deputy Town Clerk (Designate) as part of a planned leadership succession programme ahead of the retirement of its current Town Clerk in May 2027.

The full-time permanent position offers an annual salary of £39,152 (SCP28), subject to National Joint Council pay awards, with an increase of around three per cent anticipated. The successful candidate will also be enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme.

The role has been designed to provide a structured development pathway, allowing the successful applicant to work closely with the current Town Clerk before eventually stepping into the senior position.

Working at the heart of the council’s operations, the Deputy Town Clerk (Designate) will support strategic planning, governance and the delivery of council services. Responsibilities include preparing agendas, reports and minutes for council and committee meetings, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, managing day-to-day administration, supporting community projects and events, and assisting with budget management and funding applications.

The successful candidate will also deputise for the Town Clerk when required, helping to provide leadership, continuity and effective operational delivery across the council’s activities.

Applicants should have a good standard of education, experience within local government, and an understanding of governance and meeting procedures. Strong communication, organisational and IT skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The role also requires flexibility to attend evening meetings.

The council says the position offers an excellent opportunity for someone seeking to develop their career within local government and progress towards a Town Clerk role through a dedicated mentoring programme.

Applications close on Monday, 15th June 2026, with interviews scheduled to take place on Thursday, 18th June 2026.
