From the week commencing 7th September, freight trains supporting the Sizewell C project are expected to begin travelling through Leiston during the night.
It is understandable that residents living close to the railway may have questions or concerns about the potential for overnight disturbance. Measures are being put in place to help keep the impact on local communities as low as possible.
Freight movements are planned mainly at night because larger-scale daytime operations would conflict with passenger services on the East Suffolk Line.
Work has been carried out to improve the railway infrastructure, including sections of Continuous Welded Rail and upgrades to level crossings, with the aim of reducing noise.
Freight trains are expected to travel at a maximum of 10mph through built-up areas of Leiston, helping to minimise noise and disturbance to nearby homes.
The use of rail also enables significant quantities of construction materials to be transported without relying entirely on road haulage. While this does mean some overnight rail activity, efforts are being made to manage these movements as considerately as possible.
Residents should also be aware that works around Leiston Level Crossing at Station Road/Westward Ho are continuing, with the current programme due to complete on 20th September.
